Samson disrespected his calling and dismissed the need for a careful spiritual walk. Here his cavalier attitude is about to catch up with him, as his paramour Delilah is resilient and chasing a reward for handing Samson over to the Philistines.

The moral declension of Samson is lamentable. We see him now indulgent in promiscuity in Gaza, a chief city of the Philistines, and thus he exposes himself to God’s displeasure as well as his enemies. But God is very gracious and delivers Samson, even allowing him a symbolic victory in carrying away the gates of the city. In this feat, reference to the strength of the awaited Messiah is evident.

Samson has entangled himself in an unnecessary situation on account his misjudgements – but he was sorely betrayed when his betrothed wife was given to his best man! For this he enacted a clever and fair punishment in using the swiftness of the fox. God’s faithfulness to him is shown in this passage and Samson’s development into the role of Israel’s deliverer.
As per his calling from God, Samson attempted to find a legitimate occasion to bring judgement on the Philistines, but he goes about it in his own way and finds this entangles him in serious trouble and grants the Philistines a small victory.
Samson’s ministry is undoubtedly characterised by great faith and bravery yet his misjudgments at this early stage interrupt the greater good that could have been done. Here we pick up on his faith, his flaws and how he typifies the coming Messiah.
